A few words about “Even When I’m Gone” :
Turn the clocks back about one year ago: We were in Detroit to play a benefit show for Team Kendal Kidz. The Lividini family founded the organization after their daughter, Kendal, lost a long battle with Acute Myelogenus Leukemia. Team Kendal Kidz’s mission is to spread smiles today and hope for tomorrow to children that have been diagnosed with cancer.
After the show, we got the chance to meet with the Lividini family and learn more about their amazing organization and Kendal herself. What we found most inspirational from Kendal’s story is how much joy, enthusiasm, love, and positivity she brought into the world despite her circumstances.
During our meeting, Kendal’s father John asked if we would be interested in writing something for Kendal/Team Kendal Kidz. This, for us, was a very tricky, delicate, and scary preposition. When people ask us to write songs about a certain subject we tend to politely shy away from it and decline. To be honest, there’s just too much room to fall short and disappoint. But to the surprise of the rest of the group, right then and there, Kevin said he had an idea that he’d like to expand upon.
So, slowly, over the next few weeks we worked on the song. It began to turn into something that was, well…kind of indescribable. But we all felt the same unspoken energy and emotion while listening to it.
We recorded a demo, and with no intention of releasing the song, sent it to John Lividini. After a few talks he told us that we had to release the song–not for him, or for Kendal–but for everyone out there who has lost someone too soon.
After some meetings with the inspirational and passionate people at Team Kendal Kidz, Children’s Cancer Research Fund, and Rock The Cause, we decided to release “Even When I’m Gone” with 100% of the profits going to Team Kendal Kidz and Children’s Cancer Research Fund.
This weekend, we head back to play the 3rd Annual Team Kendal Kidz concert where we will debut “Even When I’m Gone”. We can’t think of a better place for its inaugural full-band performance.
“Even When I’m Gone” truly is for everyone who has ever lost someone too soon. And for Team Kendal Kidz and all those still fighting, we hope that this song helps bring a smile for today and hope for tomorrow.
Thank you and much love.
